​Dr. Dave S. Knowlton has his roots in Tennessee marching band and color guard. In high school, he was a member of the Briarcrest Band (Memphis, TN). In college, he was a member of Memphis State University's "Mighty Sound of the South" marching band, the University’s award-winning PASIC drumline, and the Bengal Lancers Winter Guard. Over the past thirty years, Dr. Knowlton has worked in eight states as a percussion instructor, marching band show designer, choreographer, and clinician for middle schools, high schools, universities, dance companies, and drum and bugle corps. In terms of marching band judging, he has judged nationally for USBands (Allentown, Pennsylvania) and over thirty other marching band shows sponsored by universities, school districts, and individual schools in the states of Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arkansas, Minnesota, and Tennessee. Dr. Knowlton has judged all captions except for color guard and field commanders. In terms of indoor judging, he has judged color guard, winds, and percussion with various circuits, including the Indiana Percussion Association (Indianapolis, Indiana), the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association (Kansas City, Missouri), Heartland Winter Arts Association (Omaha, Nebraska), and Connecting Individuals through the Performing Arts (serving East Tennessee and surrounding states). In his full-time role as a professor of education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, he researches and teaches in areas related to Educational Psychology, Design Thinking, Creativity Theory, and assessment/evaluation of education and learning.​​
